Successful writer, Martin, is struggling after the death of his wife and child in a car crash. But when he meets grieving mother, Lily at a bereavement group, his life changes and he starts to question the circumstances of the accident. Who is the mysterious character in the photographs and why can’t he shake the feeling that he’s being played?
The intriguing new film from award-winning director Steve Johnson, peels back the layers of emotions we feel when tragedy strikes and reveals an uncomfortable truth. Starring Jeremy Theobald (Following, Batman Begins) and Nicolette McKeown (MetalHedz), Convergence asks, ‘are you really in control of your life?’
The premise of Convergence is to ask the question, do we make our own decisions or is the path of our lives set out before us? Telling the story through the eyes of the Strategist, an entity that controls people’s lives through the use of chess pieces, was an interesting concept to me. That, coupled with two leading characters, both of whom have suffered the loss of something blood related and close to them, drove me to construct the story of Convergence. Casting of the film has been a challenge, having lost key cast members due to personal reasons, I am blessed to be able to work with Jeremy Theobald as Martin. Jeremy has brought a sense of gravitas to the film and his professional work has produced some amazing performances. Nicolette McKeown was cast as Lily very early on and is one of only two people who were cast originally and have stayed with the project all the way through; the other being Lee Fanning. Both these talented Scottish actors have shown and demonstrated performances beyond their years and they will both go on to have successful careers in the UK and worldwide film industry.
By keeping the crew extremely small, this not only cut costs for the film, but allowed us to the freedom to film in numerous places, even when busy, so as to not distract members of the public and draw attention to ourselves. With myself on camera and directing duty, Scott Walker on both production sound and post-production sound mixing, and my right-hand man Barry Gunning as Gaffer and overseer, this crew ensured my sanity throughout the shoot. Both these individuals are filmmakers in their own right so having extra eyes on each scene and inviting input has made the making of the film a truly collaborative project.
Because of my relationship with RED Digital Cinema, I always knew this film would look and feel amazing shot on RED. It has the digital texture that I was looking for. By adding two distinct styles within the film; handheld for the lives of Martin and Lily, and stationary, controlled shots for the Strategist, I felt this would give the audience a subconscious feeling of the real and supernatural as they follow the story.
I am lucky over the last three years to build up a support network of sponsors, all of whom have donated equipment to help me further my film-making aspirations. They include lenses from German manufacturer, Hanse-Inno-Tech, Equipment support from Ikan Corp in America and lighting from Chinese lighting company, Ledgo.
It was important to me to make Convergence as I feel it breaks with a familiar type of Scottish film that centres around zombies, drugs, gangsters, deprived housing, etc., and concentrates on the emotional connection between two individuals, with strong acting at the heart of the film. The connection that Martin and Lily make over the course of the film, coupled with the supernatural element of the Strategist contouring their moves as chess pieces should be a unique view on the story of loss, coming together and redemption. I also feel that the story is universal in origin and could be applied with people across the world — the loss of someone close and the need to move on from that loss.
Having worked in the Scottish film industry on various low/no-budget projects, I understand the need to break with clichés and bring a fresh style of film-making to the market. I believe in this project. I believe in the talent of my cast and crew. I believe in my talents as a director and cinematographer, to bring what are emotional performances to life — to create a connection between the audience and the characters. I believe that this film, once completed and marketed at the right film festivals, can make a positive impact on my career as a director, a filmmaker and as a human being.
